Mr. Jamie Barwell
Consultant Vascular Surgeon
As well as being the founder of Southwest Veins, Jamie is also the overall Clinical Lead for the practice.

Clare
Practice Manager
Clare completed a 2-year, full time AMSPAR Diploma at college which covered everything from medical shorthand to anatomy and physiology, and from secretarial training to becoming the perfect PA!
She then worked in the NHS for several years for a Consultant Paediatrician before moving across to a private sector hospital. While there, for many years, she ran the private practice for several consultants. For the last 11 years, this group included Jamie Barwell. In 2021 – when Jamie decided to open his own clinic – he invited Clare to make the move with him.
Esther
Surgical Care Practitioner
Esther qualified in 2006 at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), mainly in reconstructive plastic and burns surgery. In 2010 she moved to Plymouth and joined the plastics team at Derriford Hospital.
She met Jamie working for 5 years in vascular theatres on a ‘6-month’ secondment! In 2016 she began training to become a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) in cardiothoracic surgery, being taught to surgically harvest the long saphenous vein for bypass grafts in cardiac surgery. During lockdown in 2019 she gained her MSc at the University of Plymouth and, in 2020, joined Jamie at South West Veins.
Lana
Surgical Care Practitioner
Lana completed her nurse training at Plymouth University, qualifying in 2008. Her first job – which lasted 10 years – involved mainly vascular, cardiac and thoracic nursing in the vascular theatre, which is where she met Jamie Barwell. Lana began her (SCP) training in cardiothorac surgery in 2018. She qualified in 2020, and completed her MSc in 2021, following which she joined Jamie at South West Veins.
Like Esther, Lana has many years’ experience of supporting cardiothoracic patients throughout their treatment journey until discharge home, and both SCPs have also completed their nationally-recognised microsclerotherapy course training.
