Is varicose vein treatment painful?

On the day of treatment there is virtually no pain at all, a very small needle is used to administer a little bit of local anaesthetic and the cannula is then introduced and after that the foam going in doesn’t hurt at all. The foam does however kick off an inflammatory reaction and that’s how it works so that over the following few days and weeks, and sometimes slightly longer, the veins will become tender and inflamed so will be slightly reddened and bruised.  But then over the subsequent few weeks that discomfort will settle out as the veins themselves disappear. Occasionally patients come back and say the treatment hasn’t caused any discomfort at all and I’m slightly worried it hasn’t worked, so it’s a little bit of a ‘no pain no gain’ situation.
